To be truly successful in poker, sometimes you’ll have to lay down the best hand. I can remember a hand I played not to long ago. I was on the button with black AQ off. We were playing 1/2 no limit and it was checked around to me. I made the standard raise of 8 dollars. And got two callers, the big blind and one person in middle position. The flop comes Qd-7d-8s. I’m feeling pretty confident here. The big blind checks and the online poker player in middle position bets out about half pot, making it 18 to play.
Now here’s what was going through my head. Either he has a strong Queen, in which case I have him dominated. He’s semibluffing the diamond draw, in which case I have to raise, or he’s on a straight draw and is probably open ended. Two pair isn’t really probably here, though it is possible with 78 being connected. In any event, I decided to minraise, making it 48 to play, betting the pot and his 18. The big blind folds, and the middle position player just calls.
Ok, so two pair is definitely out of the question. A call there smells like a draw for sure. The next card comes Qh. Alright, now I’m sitting on trip queens. The MP player bets out about half pot again, a standard continuation bet of about 50 dollars. At this point I’m thinking “let’s take him to value town” So I make the minimum raise of 50 on top of his 50. He immediately calls. This was my bad play. The pot is now close to 250 dollars and it’s only 50 more for him to call. So he’s getting 1:5 odds.
If he’s on an open ended straight draw he has his 1:5 odds to keep going. If he’s on the flush draw, he has his 1:4 odds to keep going. And wouldn’t you know it, he calls and the river comes Kd. This leaves the board reading Qd-7d-8s-Qh-Kd. Again, he bets out about 1/3 pot. And this is definitely a suspicious bet. It’s almost as if you know he has the flush at this point. So I tank for about five minutes wondering if I should call and look him up or just fold my trip Qs.
In the end I ended up folding because I just sensed the flush. And lo and behold I flip up my trip queens and he shows me A8 diamonds.
Looking back I don’t think I could have bet him off his draw anyway. I had him covered 3x over with my stack. And he had about 150 left after his 50 dollar bet. Sometimes you just have to make that laydown even when you have a monster when you play poker online.
Lotteries are becoming extremely popular throughout the world. Their popularity can be seen by how the draws are often televised at prime viewing times so everybody can tick off their numbers. Even so, the odds are stacked against YOU being a winner. Yes, person, or some people, usually win every week, but that doesn’t imply the odds are good. – no matter if you played the lottery for a lifetime. The vast majority of individuals play the lottery only for fun, and at the same time maintaining the dream of possibly becoming a millionaire. Numerous people don’t only buy a lottery ticket – they’re buying a dream.

Knowing how your poker online opponents play is a huge part of being successful at online poker , but knowing just what to do with that knowledge is just as important. Once you’ve figured out which players at your table are aggressive and which ones are tight, then it’s time to start using that knowledge to your advantage. Passive poker players aren’t great when you’ve got a big hand, but they’re very handy when you’re not getting the cards you want, because you can usually get their chips without going to showdown. When you’ve figured out which players are likely to fold when raised, you’ll have a good idea of who to bluff. When a passive player is holding the blinds, you’ve got a pretty good chance of stealing those blinds with a good bluff. Aggressive players, on the other hand, are much more likely to call and raise, so they aren’t the most profitable players to bluff against. You’re more likely to be facing a reraise when you raise against an aggressive opponent, which is lousy when you’re bluffing, but great when you’ve got the nuts. When you flop a monster hand, scan your opponents and see if you’ve got any aggressive players in the pot with you, because these guys are the ones who’ll fatten the pot up for you.
It is a lamentable fact that the U.S. political structure has not traditionally been in favor of poker and gambling. I am not a big conspiracy theorist, but it has seemed remarkably difficult for gambling legislation to even reach the Senate floor. This may have to do with a lot of different factors that the normal poker online players like I never see, but it doesn’t make it any more frustrating. We want to be able to play online poker legally from the comfort of our home without having to go through loops to keep our gaming experience fair. We should be able to use our credit cards and access our bank accounts through our player accounts just like the poker online players around the world. There is a small hope that this new administration will realize just how many poker players there are in America who would appreciate an online game and finally allow the necessary legislation to pass on the Senate floor. There is always hope that the legislation will change in favor of the player, but we should not get our hopes too high. The better policy would be to sit and see what new changes take place that will affect the future of poker in the U.S.
Watching the new episodes of the 2009 World Series of Poker on ESPN made me a little confused. I know Negreanu and E-dog had a bad year, but it looked like they were playing pretty weak poker in the main event. Negreanu has been known for playing his “small ball” style. This style executes pot control by betting smaller than typically considered normal in hopes of reducing your losses if a hand goes sour.
The problem with this, as we see in the early stages of the main event, is that they are effectively playing full-board poker online. They are not bluffing their opponents ever, instead they are trying to have the best hand at showdown and get some value for it. The main event is laden with amateurs. Which means bluffing is generally a bad idea. They won’t fold. This should lend to the small ball technique, with the exception that many of the hands Negreanu and Lindgren are playing are multiway pots. It’s hard to win with AA multiway, especially if you’re trying to keep the pot small and are going to let 5 board cards come out. While ESPN decided to air a lot of pocket aces hands in the episode, it was interesting to see how each of them was played back to back.
In the introductory period, the blinds are so small that it’s hard to play real online poker. 300 BB’s is really deep, but if everyone is that deep, then there is less regard for the value of the chips. Both Lindgren and Negreanu took to min-raising with their hands. I guess they didn’t want to waste money preflop where a min bet and a 3x bet are essentially the same thing relative to the stack sizes. Over time, these saved bets should add up. But unfortunately, this style is forcing them to check call nervously with overpairs instead of confidently. They are spending entirely too much in situations where they are unsure if they are paying people off on the river, instead of using their chips to try and make their opponents fold before the turn and river. If you look at the impressive aggression of Veldhuis in these early stages, he blows these small balers out of the water. Maybe they ran bad, or maybe they played too weak. Either way, Lindgren and Negreanu have to fine-tune their methods before playing in big weak fields like the WSOP again.
I like to play online poker , and if the recent stats are any indication, you probably like to play online poker too. Despite the promises of many poker websites, online poker comes with some serious strings attached. The most serious string is the software that many casinos require you to download to your computer.
Casinos give a variety of reasons why it is absolutely necessary for you to download these things to your computer. Some cite graphics or processing speed, while others say that it improves your gaming experience. I am not sure if I believe any of these reasons. I think that they make you download the software so that your computer is linked to their casino. Not comfortable thought.
You always have the option of playing non download games on most online poker casinos. These have fewer strings attached, but often have a lower quality gaming experience. You are strongly encouraged to move your game over to the download versions. The non download versions are often hard to find, and rarely have the selection that I crave.
I think I will eventually accept that online gambling simply has more strings attached than cash games. Knowing that, however, does not keep me from yearning for the days when poker was simpler.
Another thing you often see playing online poker, and at lower level limit casino games in casinos, is an inordinate number of people who call the big blind from early position.
There’s not many situations where that id defensible. If you’ve got a good poker hand that you want to play, then make a nice raise, see what everyone does behind you. You can gain some good information that way. And as we know, information is the key to winning poker.
If you have a middling hand, throw it away. I all too many times see people call the big blind in first or second position with something like an 8-9 suited (people LOVE to play those hands) and lose lots of money.
A suited connector hand like that is alright to play if you’re going to limp in on the button, but why call with it in early position, when you have 6 or 7 other people who could easily reraise you. This happens, and often the caller than calls the reraise because he feels obligated to, and this just compounds the mistake.
And if the suited connector caller gets a draw on the flop, he’ll invariably call till the end, lose most of the time, and end up with a severely damages chip stack. And it all starts with making that early position call with a mediocre starting hand. Next time, just let it go.

We’ve discussed actual poker odds, now let’s get to the other side of the conversation-pot odds.
Pot odds is the ratio of the size of the pot versus the amount of money that you are required to bet. For instance, if you’re betting against five other people the pot odds are 5-1. So if the blind is 5 dollars, and there’s $25 in the pot, that can be a decent reward for your risk, depending on your cards.
This is where actual odds and pot odds come together. If you’ve got King-Queen of hearts and there are two hearts on the flop, then there are nine other heart cards that can make your flush, your actual odds are about 5-to-1. Remember, actual odds are the number of cards (52) minus the flop and your hand (5), divided by the number of cards that can save you (in this case, 9), and divided again by the number of cards that are still to come (in this case, 2 cards-the turn and river). So if you hoping for the flush, your odds here are 4.5 to 1.
Now it all comes together. The actual odds of your poker cards coming (4.5-to-1) are better than the pot odds (5-1), making the bet worth your while. It sounds complicated at first, but believe me, it gets easier with time, and it makes decisions a lot easier.
